Art, Music, Fans Connect At Red Rocks Mock Show

Last Saturday at a hotel six miles from Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where Phish was playing for four nights, more than 30 artists and hundreds of art lovers and collectors gathered for Mock Show, a poster and art showcase-marketplace. Held in the Sheraton Denver West Hotel’s ballroom, the Mock Show was an art lovers dream that included everyone from well-established artists, such as Jim Pollock and David Welker, to up-and-comers and fan artists (such as myself). I was honored to participate and did pretty well for my first show.

Fans showed up as early as 8 a.m. to get in line to shake hands with Pollock as he personalized posters, converse with Ryan Kerrigan, or see the new works from AJ Masthay. Mock Show was all about connections: connecting fans of the music to the art inspired by the music to the artists who were inspired by the music.

The connections made at Mock Show were not limited to poster artists, however. Several nonprofit organizations participated in the show, including the Mockingbird Foundation, Expresso Beans, Phish’s Waterwheel Foundation, and of course HeadCount. Other connections were made through music (the Heavy Pets played in the hallway) and cinema (the poster documentary American Artifact was screened and Noah Wilderman was there shooting footage for his Phish documentary, Maybe So, Maybe Not.)

While running my booth, I had a unique perspective on Mock Show. I didn’t really get a chance to roam around and see everything I wanted to see (I’m a fan as well as an artist), and I was nervous as hell hoping I would get at least a little traffic to my booth. But in the end, I was overwhelmed by the support I received from the crowd and other artists at the show. A particularly warm and fuzzy moment came when, at the beginning of the show, a woman made a bee line for my booth to purchase my Red Rocks print. She said it was at the top of her list of items to purchase. This rewarding moment eased my nervousness immediately. All that hard work was worth it! And speaking of hard work, I’d like to publically thank Jason Kaczorowski for his hard work in putting this show on. It was an amazing experience for me and everyone else involved.

Mock Show Red Rocks Rocked!

Thanks to all the artists, volunteers and collectors who helped make the inaugural Mock Show Red Rocks such a huge success. Mock Show Red Rocks hosted the largest gathering of Phish poster art in history! Counting artists and exhibitors, their assistants and Mock Show volunteers, in conjunction with pre-purchase ticketed attendees, walk-up will call guests and invited VIPs, Mock Show welcomed over 750 in attendance Saturday, August 1st, 2009 at the Sheraton Denver West in Lakewood, Colorado.

From the four nights of fantastic Phish concerts, to all the warm, friendly folks we met in Colorado, to all the amazing artists and unbelievable work on display, what an unforgettable adventure!

Jim Pollock's Mock Show Poster Triples in Value Before Show Opens

Three days before Jim Pollock's benefit posters are officially released at the Mock Show: Red Rocks, the works have already appreciated in value and begun selling on ebay for three times their original value.

The run, that was created by Pollock and printed by Fred Hosman and Jewel Noll of HoscoPress in a signed and numbered limited edition of 500, sold on the Mock Show's website on speculation of what the finished design would look like. Collectors flocked to grab these unseen posters from the inaugural art exhibition with proceeds supporting music education in Denver area through the Mockingbird Foundation. $1,000.00 has already been granted to Red Rocks Elementary and more money will impact the local Colorado community thanks to Jim Pollock's Mock Show posters and event t-shirt creations silkscreened by hand by TabootArt in Denver, CO.

Very few event posters remain and will be available while supplies last on Saturday at the PollockPrints booth.

Tickets are sold out to Mock Show: Red Rocks. We encourage you not to show up without a pre-purhased event ticket.

Here’s how some of them answered…

Isadora Bullock

1. One of my recent favorites is a lino print commemorating the Tower Jam from IT. I had wanted to put that experience into a poster format since it happened and really enjoyed trying to interpret the sound and show into one image.

2. If I weren't an artist I would be a toymaker.

3. I have a lot of ideas for new projects that exist outside of the Phish realm at the moment, but its hard not to keep making new prints when they are playing so many shows.

Tim Ripley

1. My latest work is my favorite piece at any time.

2. An architect. I've always been fascinated by architecture and building things.

3. I see myself creating paintings that are a bit more "out there". I also expect to be creating more and more block prints and screen prints in the future.

Joshua Jacobs

1. For me, my Beatles work stands out. This is work that really opened the doors for me to be more than a graphic designer for corporate america. This was the first time someone had commissioned me to do some work annd was my first real organic design project and put me on the map as an artist. I will sets of this Beatles work for sale at the Mock Show.

2. I was actually signed up to go to culinary school but switched to art school at the last minute. I look to cook.

3. I am trying to push the fine art side of my career, but love branding and marketing so much I hope to be able to continue doing shows like this while working towards being an art director.

Uncle Ebeneezer

1. Any time someone says they enjoy what we've done, that is the highest honor someone can bestow. We hold deep admiration for Jim Pollock's talent and the inspired creativity of all the artists involved.

2. If we weren't artists we'd be a just a couple of people making art. Actually, that's what we are.

3. I see ourselves and our art going to Shoreline and the Gorge after Red Rocks. And wherever this Halloween festival takes us as well. Maybe Miami for New Years. We're gonna keep on having fun and hope you do as well.

Michael Ortiz

1. I like em all.

2. If I weren't an artist what would I be... Insane!

3. I see my art going in and out of the hands of interesting people

Lindsey Kuhn

1. The poster i just finished... Because it is done!

2. If I weren't an artists I'd be an astronaut.

3. I see my art going as far as it will go.

Jonathan Lamb

1. My favorite piece I have created is our "No Anunciar!" installation. It was not only our largest installation to date, but it was at Andenken Gallery in Denver. A gallery that Like Minded has been trying to show at for several years. So it really felt like accomplishing one of our longer term goals.

2. If I wasn't an artist, I would be a ski guide.

3. I see myself and Like Minded Productions growing into the music festival scene and into underground galleries in the larger urban areas of this country.

Ryan Jerzy Red Rocks Mock Show Releases

Modeled after the municipal flag of Chicago, this is Ryan Jerzy's latest release dipicting his love of linoleum block carved printmaking.

The municipal flag of Chicago consists of two blue horizontal stripes on a field of white, each stripe one-sixth the height of the full flag, and placed slightly less than one-sixth of the way from the top or bottom, respectively. Between the two blue stripes are four red, six-pointed stars arranged in a horizontal row.

The three white stripes of the flag represent, from top to bottom, the North, West and South sides of the city. The top blue stripe represents Lake Michigan and the North Branch of the Chicago River. The bottom blue stripe represents the South Branch of the Chicago River and the Great Canal.



Jerzy is currently working on this Mock Show release (above) in homage to Jim Pollock's famous Walking Fish.
