Original Jim Pollock Phish Hampton Art For Sale

The Mimi Fishman Foundation is auctioning off Jim Pollock's original Hampton art.

This original hand-drawn Jim Pollock marker rendering was created for Phish’s triumphant return to the stage March 6th, 7th & 8th, 2009 in Hampton, Virginia.

This authentic, one-of-a-kind color conception created on newsprint served as the final concert poster design. This design was produced as a three color, hand-carved, linoleum block, limited edition print of 750 posters which were sold at the three nights of comeback concerts. Hand-pressed on an antique Washington Printers Proofing press in Chicago, the edition was signed and numbered and sold out at the shows.

Jim Pollock has created over 25 hand-pressed limited edition concert posters for Phish in addition to several hundred other illustrations utilized in everything cartoons for the band’s official newsletter, the Doniac Schvice, to other posters, t-shirts, album covers, ticket designs and various related merchandise.

Mock Show Artist Spotlight: AJ Masthay

Aaron J. Masthay is a printmaker best known for his elaborate hand-carved, hand-pressed linoleum block posters.

AJ, as his avid collectors refer to him, utilizes a reduction process to create his beautiful, labor intensive, multiple color prints using only one piece of linoleum. This process was first developed by Pablo Picasso who nicknamed it the "suicide method" because the block is destroyed as the print is created. For this reason, it is extremely important to plan the image carefully before beginning to print.

The first step involves cutting away the white areas of the image. Linoleum printing is essentially a form of stamp printing, so whatever is cut out of the block will not be inked. After the white areas are cut away, the first color is printed on the paper. The artist must decide how many prints there are going to be when they print the first color because they will not be able to go back and make more after this point. They roll ink on the raised surface with a tool called a brayer. The linoleum plate is then hand fed through a Vandercook Press and uneven application are smoothed onto the paper with a tool called a barren. After the artist prints the first color, they then cut out the parts of the block that they want to remain that color. This process is repeated, cutting away what stays until the print is finally the print is set to dry and become signed and numbered.

(above) AJ's favorite release came from his Coventry Series. "I'd have to say my favorite out of my past works would be my Coventry series, more specifically the night set. The feedback I got from collectors commenting on how they captured the overall concert experience really hit home for me.Now once some of this summer's stuff is released this may change..."

Masthay's last release was an homage to Phish's comeback shows at the Hampton Coliseum. He explains, "Bass Bomb II: The Fallout was made in response to the numerous requests for a second edition to the Bass Bomb I (the original 8 color linoleum block print that sold out immediately). My original intent with Hampton was to do a three print set telling a story about the bomb being dropped and the days following. Due to time constraints for the Phanart show in Troy, NY, I cut it back to one print. This was a great excuse to go back to the original idea and at least make it a set of two prints."

Masthay reflects on Phish 3.0 explaining, "I do have to say that the standard of living for summer tour have been raised a bit. Gone are the days of sleeping in the car or finding a no name motel off the highway."

As for his ideal show, he's "not a huge fan of the long drive, so it would have to be somewhere in the northeast. I'd say SPAC is my optimal venue. Not much into the "pre show antics" anymore but a few beers in the lots is always fun." Music wise he's still waiting to hear a Harpua. "1st set or 2nd set, I dont care. I'd just be ecstatic to hear it once." Favorite parking lot food? "I can remember getting this pad thai in the lots I think at the Lemonwheel that was killer. I need to find me some of that again. Those french bread pizzas always hit the spot after a show too."

Hundreds of Phish fans will be looking for sold-out tickets in Denver this August - and not just for the Phish show. MOCK SHOW: RED ROCKS - a poster exhibition in support of music education for children - is on its way to selling out. The event will feature dozens of poster artists, including Jim Pollock, David Welker, Ryan Kerrigan, Fred Hosman, Tripp, Bruce Horan, Tim Ripley, Ian Millard, Jamie Huntsman, Jon Blake, Justin Helton, Erin Cadigan, Drew Findley, Jonathan Lamb, Michael Ortiz, Joshua Jacobs, Uncle & Aunt Ebeneezer, AJ Masthay, and The Faded Line.

This isn't the first "poster convention" for Phish fans, but it's the largest and grandest yet. It will be held at a Sheraton Denver West exhibition space that features views of the Denver skyline & surrounding mountains, only 6 miles (less than 10 minutes) from Red Rocks Amphitheater. Ticket packages are available featuring a PollockPrints/Hosco Press collaboration benefit release Poster and/or T-Shirt.

Mock Show Welcomes David Welker

Mock Show: Red Rocks is pleased to announce the addition of artist David Welker.

Welker's two decade long professional career has ranged from large-scale murals for the world's wealthiest patrons to album covers and posters for the legendary rock band Phish as well as renegade art shows in Boston and New York.

In 1993 Welker painted the cover of Phishs' theme album entitled "Rift", which received worldwide acclaim from album art enthusiasts and was included in Relix magazines "Top 10 Most Iconic Album Covers of All Time" collectors'.

Welker's work can also be seen on the inside cover of the Billy Breathes album in a photograph of his canvas of Mike Gordon hanging on the wall above Trey's dog, Marley.

Mock Show Artist Spotlight: Justin Helton

Designer and silkscreen poster artist extraordinaire Justin Helton has emerged from the south as one of the best young guns in the rock poster industry today. Raised in Knoxville, Tennessee where he still lives with his wife Mary Kate, Helton runs his own design firm Status Serigraph which he hopes to one day expand to incorporate a storefront that will include a small gallery space, an open print studio and office space to meet with clients.

Justin admits his favorite work is the posters he's done for Trey Anastasio. "The fact that I was asked to do them is the single most encouraging thing that has happened to me. In the design process, [Trey] actually gave me feedback as well. So I feel like he was as happy with them as was I. I hope at one point I have the honor of doing a poster for Trey's other band...maybe you've heard of them...Phish?"

Helton has been making posters for over 3 years and has done recent work for Trey Anastasio on his Classic TAB tour, as well as work for My Morning Jacket, Jack Johnson, Ween, Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Disco Biscuits, and many more.

Helton admits that if he wasn't an artist/designer, he would have no clue what he would be. "I've never wanted to be anything else in my life... But if I HAD to pick I would say a musician. I don't really play any instruments but dabble with electronic music and production. It’s fun and I could see it being an enjoyable career."

Justin is catching 8 shows in the first half of '09 and says his "perfect show" would at Red Rocks. "Arriving early, hanging out with old friends and new... Not selling posters on lot but in the show - Official Posters. Getting to go backstage and meeting the band. Discussing the poster design and maybe the show to come and getting them to sign it... go back out to the seats and enjoy a great show. Throw in a Tube > Carini > Maze > Frankenstein > Crosseyed > Camel Walk... and I'm all set."
